At a shipyard in Turku, Finland a very big ship is under construction. The name of the ship is MS Oasis of the Seas and she is ordered by Royal Caribbean International. The construction of the ship is carried out by STX Europe, one of the world’s largest shipbuilding companies.

Foundations for the Oasis of the Seas were laid down in December 2007 and her maiden voyage is scheduled for the end of 2009. The Oasis of the Seas will have an overall length of 360 metres and rise 65 metres over the water surface. She will be powered by eight Wärtsilä V12 marine diesel engines, each of which produces 17,500 horsepower. The 16 passenger decks of the Oasis of the Seas will be able to accommodate 5,400 passengers, with a total extended capacity of 7,300 if third and fourth passengers are taken into account.

The layout of the Oasis of the Seas is based around different neighbourhoods. The Central Park neighbourhood will bring a new concept to the oceans with its three different gardens offering a large variety of tropical trees and plants. This lush area, located in the central section of the ship, will be longer than a football field and open to the skies above. Central Park will also be home to the most exclusive dining and shopping facilities aboard, including the first levitating bar on a ship and an art gallery.

The Boardwalk neighbourhood is more family orientated, offering fun for everyone. At the aft end of the Boardwalk is the AquaTheatre, a unique combination of swimming pool and stage. The Boardwalk is also home to the first ever carousel and zip line at sea. For the hungry, the Boardwalk will offer a wide selection of casual food outlets, including a trademark Johnny Rockets and the Seafood Shack.

The heart of the social life aboard the Oasis of the Seas will be the Royal Promenade neighbourhood. The Promenade offers relaxation in the morning, bustling life in the afternoon and vibrant entertainment in the evenings. Between the shopping and service outlets there are numerous bars, cafés, restaurants and pubs.
