The keywords for understanding the magic about Breitling are history and quality. The Swiss company has also worked very well on developing and making the most of its aeronautical heritage.

The story of Breitling began in 1884 when Leon Breitling founded the company in St. Imier in the Swiss canton of Jura, a region famous for making watches.

The ambition of 24-year-old Leon Breitling was to produce technical watches of the highest quality, an idea that was well timed with the industrial development of automobiles and aeroplanes. The business soon expanded and manufacturing was moved to the village of La-Chaux-de-Fonds. In 1915 Breitling produced their first wristwatch chronograph and this was to become a specialisation of the company for years to come. Innovations such as independent push pieces that allowed cumulative or incremental recording of time made Breitling a favourite among aviators and pilots. Breitling was chosen as the official supplier of time keeping solutions to the British Royal Air Force in 1936 and a few years later they were also the official watch of US Air Force pilots.

Over the years following World War II the Breitling brand has constantly been on the forefront of innovation with a number watches that were more or less instant classics. 1952 saw the release of the Navtimer, a model that allowed pilots to calculate flight plans. After being approached by astronaut Scott Carpenter Breitling introduced the first 24 hour chronograph in 1962. Another milestone is the invention of the first automatic chronograph in 1969. Breitling was part of the consortium that achieved this breakthrough and automatic chronographs have been an important part of the Breitling line-up ever since. In recent years, one of the most interesting models is the Emergency, which was launched in 1995. This watch comes equipped with a miniature radio transmitter for the air traffic emergency channel.

It is this heritage of quality and innovation that makes Breitling watches unique. These instruments for professionals of the aviation industry represent superior precision and functionality. A Breitling watch carries within it the spirit, the adventure and the fashion of the early days of flight.
